Kurt Cobain About a Son is a non-traditional feature film about the late musician and artist Kurt Cobain. Based on more than 25 hours of previously unheard audiotapes of interviews, Mr. Cobain recounts his own life – from his childhood and adolescence to his days of musical discovery and later dealings with explosive fame – and offers often piercing insights into his life, music, and times.

The audio interviews are carefully voiced over 35mm imagery of the places in Cobain's early life as he recounts his experiences, from a working class neighborhood in small logging town in the Pacific northwest, to his cultural awakening at a liberal arts college town, to his explosive fame living while living in an international metropolis. This structure is augmented by newly constructed animation, archival work of the legendary Seattle music scene photographer Charles Peterson, and overlaid with the haunting original score by Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Nirvana producer Steve Fisk, as well as the music of 20 artists who influenced or touched Cobain during his life. The result is a tangible look at a man who went from impoverished indie rocker to world-famous tabloid figure in less than a year.

Told in a cinematic language like no other, this method of filmmaking creates a profound, almost dream-like autobiographical account of Cobain's development as a person and an artist, but at the same time allows the audience an unprecedented intimacy with this legendary figure in popular American culture.

About a Son was an official selection by the Toronto & Rome Film Festivals, a finalist for an Independent Spirit Award, a winner of the Maysales Brothers Award for Best Documentary, and also the winner of the Silver Docs Cinematic Vision Award.
